Let me post my first excerpt from the ID-friendly book,The Plausibility of Life.

present-day organisms come from previous organisms, so they may retain remnants of the properties of their ancestors, including properties that allowed them to change in the past. A big surprise of modern biology has been conservation – that even distantly related organisms use similar processes for cellular function, development, and metabolism.

Yes, this was a surprise from the non-teleological perspective. But it is something that is predicted from front-loading evolution.
