Sam Harris provides his bio as follows:

He is a graduate in philosophy from Stanford University and has studied both Eastern and Western religious traditions, along with a variety of contemplative disciplines, for twenty years. Mr. Harris is completing a doctorate in neuroscience.

This is the common bio that is found on dozens of web pages. While this is all technically true, the wording gave me the impression that Harris got a graduate degree from Stanford and then used this training to objectively study various religions. In other words, it makes Harris sound as if he has been approaching religion as a scholar for two decades. But this is a false impression.
